BIJAPUR, MAY 13. The BJP retained the Bijapur Lok Sabha seat and won three of the eight Assembly segments in the district. The Union Minister of State for Railways, Basanagouda R. Patil Yatnal, defeated the Congress candidate, B.S. Patil Managuli, by 37,533 votes. He poled 3,44,905 votes. While Mr. Managuli got 3,07,372 votes, N.S. Khed of the Janata Dal (S) secured 1,37,457 votes. In the Bagalkot Lok Sabha Constituency, P.C. Gaddigoudar of the BJP defeated R.S. Patil of the Congress by 1.52 lakh votes. While Mr. Gaddigoudar secured 4,21,647 votes, Mr. Patil got 2,69,145 votes. The candidates of the Janata Dal (S), the BSP and the Kannada Nadu party forfeited their deposit. In the Assembly election, the three Ministers from Bijapur and Bagalkot districts, B.S. Patil Sasanur, R.B. Thimmapur and M.L. Ustad, faced a humiliating defeat. Of the eight Assembly seats in Bijapur district, the Congress won only three seats. While the BJP won three seats, the Janata Dal (S) and an independent candidate bagged one each. In the Bijapur Assembly segment, Appasaheb Mallappa Pattanashetti of the BJP defeated the Minister of State for Minority Development, M.L. Ustad, by 24,033 votes. While Mr. Pattanashetti secured 70,001 votes, Mr. Ustad polled 45,968 votes. Six other candidates lost their deposit. The AICC member and former MP, M.B. Patil, defeated M.S. Rudragouda of the Janata Dal (U) by 29,185 votes in the Tikota segment. Mr. Patil got 48,198 votes, while Mr. Rudragouda polled 19,013 votes. In the Huvinahipparagi segment, Shivaputrappa Desai of the BJP defeated the Minister for Agriculture Marketing, B.S.Patil Sasanur, by 6,297 votes. Mr. Desai polled 39,224 votes. The JD(S) candidate, Malakendragouda Patil, secured 12,774 votes. However, the Congress wrested the Basavanabagewadi segment from the BJP. The Congress candidate, Shivanand Patil, defeated the BJP candidate, Sanganna K. Bellubbi, by 3,305 votes. While he secured 50,238 votes, Mr. Bellubbi polled 46,933 votes. In the Muddebihal segment, which witnessed a triangular contest, the Congress candidate, C.S. Nadagouda, won by 2,450 votes. While his nearest rival, Vimalabai Deshmukh of the Janata Dal (S) got 27,658 votes, the BJP candidate, Mangaladevi Shanthagouda Biradar, polled 20,669 votes. The Janata Dal (S) won the Ballolli Assembly segment. The former zilla panchayat President and the party candidate, R.K. Rathod, defeated the member of the dissolved Assembly, Raju Algur, who contested as a Congress candidate, by 11,142 votes. Mr. Rathod and Mr. Algur secured 39,915 and 28873 votes, respectively, while the BJP candidate, Vithal Katakdond, finished third with 27,448 votes. Ashok Shahabadi of the BJP won the Sindagi seat pushing the member of dissolved Assembly, Sharanappa Sunagar, to the third position. He defeated his nearest rival from the Janata Dal (S), M.C., Managuli, by 9,050 votes.
