Diabetics' number on the up in city
HYDERABAD,
MAY 13.
The city has the dubious distinction of accounting for 16.6 per cent of four crore diabetic adults in the country. The managing director of MV Hospital, Chennai, A. Ramachandran, who was in the city in connection with the opening of a modern diabetes clinic recently, said prevalence of diabetes in the urban areas was high.
The age standardised prevalence of diabetes and impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) was at 13.2 per cent and 14.2 per cent respectively. A large percentage of those with IGT become diabetics in a short time, he said, referring to research by the Diabetes Research Centre, Chennai. Stating that the doyen of diabetology, M. Viswanathan, established the 50-year-old super speciality hospital in Chennai, he said MV Diabetes Clinic with state-of-the-art facility was opened for providing high quality diabetes healthcare to patients in the city. The veteran film actor, Akkineni Nageswara Rao, inaugurated the clinic.
