HYDERABAD, MAY 13. The Telugu Desam Party president, N.Chandrababu Naidu, has attributed the anti-incumbency factor to the poor showing of the BJP-led NDA combine and the better performance of Opposition parties in most of the States in the Lok Sabha elections. Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, he said that prima facie it appeared that the anti- incumbency factor was responsible for the defeat of the nominees of the ruling parties in most States, which witnessed good development and progress. He said that reforms were being implemented worldwide to improve the living standards of the people and reduce poverty. He said the outcome of the Lok Sabha elections in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karanataka, Punjab, Haryana, Maharashtra, and to some extent in Gujarat, showed that it was anti-incumbency. He said the Prime Minister, A.B.Vajpayee, Deputy Prime Minister, L.K.Advani, and BJP president, M.Venkaiah Naidu, spoke to him telephonically earlier in the day. He, however, did not elaborate what they discussed. Replying to a question, he said that his party would remain with the NDA and work as a responsible opposition. The party's politburo would meet in the next couple of days to find out the factors which led to the defeat and take remedial steps. He said that there were "no regrets" with regard to the development policies pursued by his Government. The people were the ultimate arbitrators and their sentiments should be respected. His Government secured maximum funds from the Centre and spent them to achieve "leap frog development." Referring to the suicide committed by a party functionary, he appealed to the cadres to take the defeat "sportingly" and face the situation bravely. He declined to comment on the move by the new Government to scrap Janmabhoomi.
