NEW DELHI, MAY 13. Registering one of its best performances in almost two decades, the Congress not only bagged six of the seven Lok Sabha seats in the Capital but also humbled many BJP stalwarts in the process. So strong was the Congress wave that the saffron party lost even in those segments where it had won recently in the December 2003 Assembly polls. The resentment was almost across the entire Capital with the sole exception of the South Delhi constituency. In fact, the Congress, that had won 47 seats in the December 2003 polls, improved upon its performance winning in 55 Assembly segments. The BJP won in 15 segments including the Moti Nagar by-election Assembly seat, down by five seats from what it had won in the Assembly polls. For instance in the Outer Delhi Parliamentary constituency, the Congress led in 18 of the 21 Assembly segments with the BJP far behind in three segments. In the East Delhi seat, the Congress led in 18 segments and the BJP in two. In South Delhi, where the BJP put up a spirited fight, it led in six segments and the Congress in four. In the Karol Bagh (SC) and Chandni Chowk seats, it was a clear sweep with the Congress bagging all the five and four Assembly segments respectively. In New Delhi, the Congress led in three segments and the BJP in two, while in Delhi Sadar, the Congress led in four segments and BJP in one. This is first time since 1984 that the party has won in 55 segments. In 1984, the party had won all the seven Lok Sabha seats and got 68.72 per cent of the total votes polled. OUTER DELHI: Sajjan Kumar of the Congress defeated Sahib Singh Verma of BJP by 2,23,790 votes. In this parliamentary constituency, the Congress led in 18 segments and the BJP in three. The Congress led in Madipur (34,710), Tri Nagar (26,588), Shakur Basti (33,814), Shahbad Daulatpur (49,850), Bawana (SC) (57,847), Sultanpur Majra (43,948), Mangolpuri (39,690), Nangloi Jat (42,511), Hastsal (59,885), Najafgarh (39,358), Nasirpur (50,783), Palam (46,219), Mahipalpur (32,404), Mehrauli (31,802), Saket (39,119), Dr. Ambedkar Nagar (32,875), Tughlakabad (35,208) and Badarpur (40,107). The BJP led in Shalimar Bagh (38,376), Badli (65,383) and Vishnu Garden (25,997). EAST DELHI: Sandeep Dikshit of the Congress beat Lal Bihari Tiwari of BJP by 2,29,779 votes. The Congress led in 18 segments and the BJP in only two. The Congress won in Trilokpuri (35,933), Patparganj (36,767), Mandawali (29,700), Geeta Colony (35,391), Gandhi Nagar (26,197), Krishna Nagar (30,981), Vishwas Nagar (40,099), Shahdara (29,353), Seema Puri (39,045), Nand Nagari (35,451), Rohtas Nagar (24,919), Babarpur (28,481), Seelampur (34,796), Ghonda (23,694), Yamuna Vihar (32,396), Karawal Nagar (49,561), Wazirpur (27,373), Narela (35,018), Bhlaswa Jehangirpuri (49,344) and Adarsh Nagar (33,629). SOUTH DELHI: Vijay Kumar Malhotra of the BJP beat R.K. Anand of the Congress by 16,0005 votes. The BJP led in six segments and the Congress in four. The BJP led in Kalkaji (28,809), Malviya Nagar (27,173), Hauz Khas (22,825), Janakpuri (23,390), Hari Nagar (31,052), Tilak Nagar (31,726). The Congress led in Okhla (32,409), R.K. Puram (21,624), Delhi Cantonment (16,205) and Rajouri Garden (27,546). CHANDNI CHOWK: Kapil Sibal of the Congress beat Smriti Z. Irani by 79,417 votes. The Congress led in all the segments. Paharganj (30,220), Matia Mahal (33,503), Balimaran (36,133), Chandni Chowk (26,009). DELHI SADAR: Jagdish Tytler of the Congress beat Vijay Goel of the BJP by 15,974 votes. The Congress led in four segments and BJP in one. The Congress won in Timarpur (27,156), Model Town (25,767), Kamla Nagar (30,489) Sadar (32,576). The BJP led in Moti Nagar (34,310). KAROL BAGH (SC): Krishna Tirath of the Congress beat Anita Arya of the BJP by 37, 629 votes. The Congress won in all the five segments. Patel Nagar (27,770), Rajinder Nagar (24,980), Karol Bagh (SC) (27,382), Ram Nagar (26,603) and Baljeet Nagar (30, 999).
NEW DELHI: Ajay Maken of the Congress beat Jagmohan of the BJP by 12,784 votes. The Congress led in three segments and BJP in two. The Congress leads include Gole Market (19,372), Minto Road (25,504), Jangpura (23,401). The BJP led in Sarojni Nagar (18,331) and Kasturba Nagar (22,069).
