This Day That Age
Mr. Chou En-lai, the Chinese Prime Minister, addressing the nine-nation conference in Geneva on May 12 for settling the Indo-China issue, quoted Mr. Jawaharlal Nehru, in the course of his speech. Mr. Chou quoted the following passage from Mr. Nehru's speech in the House of the People in New Delhi on April 24: "The conflict in Indo-China is in its origin and essential character a movement of resistance to colonialism and attempts to deal with such resistance by traditional methods of suppression and divide and rule." After quoting Mr. Nehru, the Chinese Prime Minister said, "However, M. Georges Bidault, chief of the French delegation, in his statement of May 8 at this conference, disclaimed completely the responsibility of France for the Indo-China war. This is obviously a distortion of historical facts." Mr. Chou also referred to the recent Colombo Conference of the Prime Ministers of Ceylon, India, Pakistan, Burma and Indonesia. Mr. Chou reiterated his plea that the Asian countries should consult among themselves to seek common measures to safeguard peace and security in Asia.
