`Neglect of farmers led to rout in southern States'

By Our Staff Reporter

NAGAPATTINAM, MAY 14. The neglect of farmers' interests in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka resulted in the defeat of the All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), the Telugu Desam and the Congress in the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections, S. Ranganathan, general secretary of the Cauvery Delta Farmers Welfare Association, told The Hindu today.

Farmers of the three southern States stood totally alienated from their governments.

The three ruling parties had nothing in common politically and were vying with one another in promoting the industrial and information technology sector.

While suicide by farmers was reported in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, no such incident happened in Tamil Nadu. But the severe drought resulted in heavy financial and agriculture production loss in the Cauvery delta region.
