HYDERABAD, MAY 14. Traffic hassles at one of the busiest junctions in the city, Greenlands junction, do not seem to have any end in sight. From dawn to dusk, this is one junction where a minor traffic snarl can spread its tentacles right across the Begumpet flyover and on the other side, towards Punjagutta and Ameerpet as well. Commuters coming from the Hotel Green Park side and proceeding towards Somajiguda are already complaining about the ban on a right turn at the signal, instead of which they have to go towards Somajiguda or the Monappa Island side, turn left and a little ahead, take a right underneath the flyover and then proceed to the Monappa Island side alongside the Lifestyle Building. "We do not want to stop the traffic proceeding towards the Begumpet flyover for the second time at Greenlands junction and that is why we banned the right turn," reasons the Additional Commissioner of Police (traffic) D.T. Naik. However, commuters have more to complain about if the traffic bosses go ahead with their idea of a complete ban on right turns at the junction. This means that motorists coming from the Hyderabad Public School side and Begumpet flyover will also not be allowed to take a right turn towards Ameerpet. Once the complete ban is on, these motorists will have to proceed straight towards Monappa Island after coming down from the flyover, and take a u-turn from the Rajiv Gandhi statue, again come straight and then turn left towards Ameerpet. This is for the normal traffic. Heavyweights like buses and lorries will have to go round the island. However, regular commuters say that if this rule is enforced, vehicles coming from the Punjagutta side will have to be stopped near Monappa Island, which could result in further chaos. "It is already hell on the Begumpet road. If this rule is also implemented, it will further worsen the traffic situation," says Radhakrishna, a regular user of the route. Another cause of a traffic jam at Greenlands junction is the clashing of motorists coming down the flyover and those coming from Kundanbagh side intending to take the right towards Ameerpet. However, Mr. Naik says that if the new rule is implemented, then all motorists, from the flyover and Kundanbagh as well, can come straight to Monappa Island and take the u-turn from there. It will reduce traffic snarls. "Our aim is to let the traffic flow without a break," Mr. Naik says, adding that the proposal is still under discussion.
