CHENNAI, MAY 15. The Vanniyar Sangam president, A.K. Natarajan, yesterday expressed the hope that the new government would link rivers in the country for solving the State's drinking water problem, besides meeting its irrigation needs. In a statement here, he said the demand for linking of rivers was put forward by the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa; the outgoing Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, and filmstar Rajnikant, with a view to finding a lasting solution to the State's water scarcity. Efforts would shortly be made to bring farmers and the public under the banner of a `movement for linking of rivers'. If necessary, agitations would be launched in support of the demand, said Mr. Natarajan. The poll outcome in the State indicated that the Chief Minister's achievements had not been properly conveyed to the people, he said. The Sangam would continue to support her efforts at making Tamil Nadu number one State.
