KOZHIKODE, MAY 15. The no-confidence motion moved by the United Democratic Front (UDF) against the Mayor, Thottathil Raveendran, was defeated at the council meeting held on Friday. In the 51-member council, only 17 councillors supported the motion while 32 voted against the motion. The lone BJP member, K. Krishnan, remained neutral. The Congress member, U.T. Rajan, was not present at the meeting. The House witnessed heated exchanges between the ruling LDF and the Opposition during the discussions on the no-confidence motion. The discussion lasted four hours. The District Collector, T.O. Sooraj, chaired the meeting. The UDF councillors had given a notice to the Collector seeking permission to bring a no- confidence motion against the Mayor on April 30. They alleged that the Mayor at a council meeting held on April 22 had permitted the CPI(M) member, P. Divakaran, to make disparaging remarks on the Chief Minister, A.K. Antony. Mr. Divakaran had called the Chief Minister a `butcher' while taking part in a discussion on giving adequate protection to the inmates of the Kozhikode district jail.
