Pondicherry
By Our Staff Reporter
PONDICHERRY, MAY 15. As part of its initiative to control the mosquito menace in Pondicherry, the Municipality will conduct a door-to-door survey from Sunday in coordination with NSS volunteers. The survey will focus on the status of septic tanks, open drains, public toilets and public taps. The Municipality Commissioner, Alphonse, who presided over the function held to sensitise 200 NSS volunteers and SHG members, said that the survey will be a sort of awareness campaign since the students will appeal to the residents to contribute their efforts in the mosquito eradication programme. The students would cover nearly one lakh households during the survey and they would be provided with questionnaires in which they would ask house owners whether their septic tanks were closed properly and wind pipes were closed with a mesh. ``After the survey is completed, we will ask local residents associations also sensitise the residents and take steps", he said. The NSS State Liaison Officer E.M. Rajan felt that when students conduct the survey, the house owners would be truthful and come forward with the correct information. The students would cover 42 wards in the municipal area. The present survey was a follow up of last year's rally in the urban areas to create awareness on mosquito eradication. One sanitary inspector from the Municipality would accompany every group of 30 NSS volunteers, he said.
