Handbook to promote safe workplace

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, MAY 15. In an effort to encourage companies to create a safer environment particularly for women, the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) along with the National Commission for Women (NCW) has brought out a comprehensive handbook aimed at facilitating and promoting safer environment at workplace.

Expected to help companies formulate their own policies and mechanisms of redressal, the CII handbook outlines physical harassment, verbal harassment, written or graphic harassment and also speaks about the sexual harassment policy. The handbook also gives suggestion about education and training at workplace and suggests that companies should organise education and training programmes to educate the office staff.

The handbook "Sexual Harassment at Workplace - A Preventive and Remedial Measure'' is aimed at making the corporate more concerned about the welfare of the women folk. "Sexual harassment at workplace violates a person's sense of dignity and right to earn a living with dignity. It is against the fundamental rights embodied in the Indian Constitution and also against basic human rights,'' explained a CII employee.

"It is imperative that employers ensure that the organisation has a beneficial workplace environment in order to facilitate safety for women employees and provide support and resources to women who lodge complaints.'' In an effort to better the work environment, the hand book suggests an interactive session to explain the company's sexual harassment policy, use of commercially produced audiotapes and computerised training programmes on sexual harassment besides help and guidance from outside professional agencies.

The handbook also provides a compliant mechanism which explains the new guidelines issued by the Supreme Court of India.
