Rain may delay completion of Goshree road work

By Our Staff Reporter

KOCHI, MAY 15 . Despite the best efforts of the Goshree Islands Development Authority (GIDA), work on the link roads for the Goshree bridges is likely to be delayed beyond May owing to the rain.

Eight days of roadwork were lost to the rains triggered by low pressure last week and with the onset of the monsoon rains, the works would lose momentum further.

Work on the Vallarpadam Island is likely to be the worst affected by the rains as heavy winds and slushy ground obstruct work during the rains.

However, the GIDA is hopeful that paving of the roads will be completed in spite of the rain. It would not be feasible to tar the roads during the rain, said a GIDA source today.

The rain notwithstanding, installation of lights for the bridges is on and it is progressing in tandem with the work being done by a group of artists led by C. N. Karunakaran on the entrance to the bridges.

The civil works on four pillars are complete and artists will now begin installing precast cultural motifs on the pillars along with the central artwork. Each of the pillars will highlight a local performing art form and will carry brief descriptions of the art form in relief.
