Heat wave to continue

NEW DELHI MAY 15. Heat wave conditions will continue to prevail in the Capital on Sunday, as Delhiites will wake up to a mainly clear sky. However, sky is likely to become partly cloudy towards afternoon or evening with possibility of thundery developments in some areas. The maximum temperature is likely to be around 42 degree Celsius.

The maximum temperature recorded at Safdarjung and Palam on Saturday was 42.6 and 43.2 degree Celsius respectively while the minimum was 30.5 and 28.6 degree Celsius. The maximum and minimum humidity recorded at Safdarjung was 43 and 21 per cent, while Palam recorded 54 and 22 per cent respectively.

Labourer killed

NEW DELHI MAY 15. A labourer was killed and another injured when scaffolding erected for maintenance work in a building in a west Delhi area collapsed on them, Fire Department sources said today.

Amar Singh (27) was killed on the spot in the mishap in Karampura area of the city, they said.

Another labourer Vardhan (25) was injured and had to be hospitalised.

Sentenced

NEW DELHI MAY 15. A Delhi court today sentenced to life imprisonment two persons for killing a man for ransom in Hardwar two years ago. The convicts had abducted Balbir from Dabri area in West Delhi and killed him at Hardwar as the victim's family did not meet the ransom demand.

Additional Sessions Judge H P Sharma ordered life term for Tejpal and Manoj for killing Balbir on January one, 2002 for a ransom of Rs 2.5 lakh.

Third accused Vijaypal, a juvenile, is facing trial in a juvenile court in the Capital.

In a complaint, Balbir's brother said Balbir, who had gone to the market, was missing since January 17.

The police traced the ransom call to the phone of Sunil, a friend of Vijaypal. Sunil said that his phone was used by Viajaypal. When Vijaypal was interrogated he broke down and confessed.

Subsequently other convicts were arrested and the body of the victim was recovered.

Tejpal and Manoj were convicted under section 302 of the Indian Penal Code.
