IOA to bid for 2014 Asian Games

NEW DELHI, MAY 15. The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) will bid to host the Asian Games in 2014 in New Delhi.

The President of the IOA, Suresh Kalmadi, announced this at a press conference at the National Stadium here on Saturday.

"We have got the Commonwealth Games in 2010 and we are bidding for the Olympics in 2016. We are now bidding for the 2014 Asian Games, and the work will start very soon,'' said Kalmadi.

The IOA president, who emphasised that it was convenient to have similar governments in Delhi and at the Centre for the execution of the sports plans with regard to hosting mega events, said that everything would be in place for the Commonwealth Games and that only additional efforts like enhanced Games Village would be required to host the Asian Games.

Meanwhile, a run was organised to celebrate the 15th Asian Games to be held in Doha from December 1 to 15, 2006.

It was observed that the first run was done at the National Stadium, as the venue had played host to the inaugural Asian Games in 1951.

Some of the leading sportspersons were present as a few races were held for children in various age groups. It was announced that similar fun runs would be held in various cities of Asia over the next two years. — Our Special Correspondent
