Kottayam girls in final

THRISSUR, MAY 15. Defending champion Kottyam girls survived a scare from Ernakulam but squeezed out a narrow win to reach the final in 21st State Youth basketball championship at the GHSS, Kandassankadavu here on Saturday.

Kottayam trailed Ernakulam till the end of the third quarter but lifted its game in the last quarter to pip its rival 45-43. Kottayam owes its victory to K.S.Anu who did the bulk of scoring with 30 points.

In boy's section, holder Thrissur and strong contender Malappuram eked out hard fought wins over Ernakulam and Thiruvananthapuram respectively to move into the semifinals.

Pathanamthitta and Alappuzha completed the semifinal line-up in the boy's section.

The results:

Boys (quarterfinals): Malappuram 56 (Robin James 18, Nithin Thampi 14, Sujay Thomas 13) bt Thiruvananthapuram 41 (M.I.Nithin 14, K.S.Anism 9, Jasif 7); Pathanamthitta 69 (Nirmal 22, Sanoo Soman 10) bt Kottayam 35 (Albin Baby 24); Thrissur 59 (Jithin Paul 21, Eudrick 12) bt Ernakulam 48 (Easy Ashwin 16); Alappuzha 28 (Rahul 6).

Girls (semifinal): Kottayam 45 (K.S.Anu 30) bt Ernakulam 43 (Annamma Abraham 24, Gayathri 11).
