Eloor residents complain of water pollution

By Our Staff Reporter

KOCHI, MAY 15 . Hundreds of residents in Eloor are once again facing the problem of polluted drinking water due to the increased presence of pollutants in the Kalamassery-Manjummel branch of the Periyar.

Residents in the area have complained of foul odour and change in the colour of water stored for drinking and cooking purposes. They had earlier lodged complaints with the panchayat authorities regarding pollution in the Kalamassery-Manjummel branch of the Periyar.

Majority of the factories in the Eloor industrial belt draw water for industrial use and drinking purposes in their townships from this branch of the river. The residents in the area said iron complex formation was detected in the water supplied to them.

Environmental activists have lodged complaints with the Kerala State Pollution Control Board against the pollution of the Kalamassery-Manjummel branch of the Periyar. They suspect that this branch of the river is polluted by the dumping of chemicals from tanker lorries parked at the Integrated Truck terminal in Kalamassery. The Periyar Malineekarana Virudha Samithi and the international NGO, Greenpeace, alleged that the pollutants from lorries were emptied into the river during the night hours.

Meanwhile, protest is building up among Eloor residents against the Pollution Control Board, which has not acted upon their complaint.
