Kathakali award announced

KOCHI, MAY 15. The Ernakulam Kathakali Club's `Kalahamsam' award has gone to the Kathakali artiste, Kalamandalam Ramachandran Unnithan. The `Tauryatrikam' award has gone to the `madhalam' artiste, Kalamandalam Narayanan Nambeesan, said A.D. Krishnanasan, president of the club.

The award consists of Rs. 3,001, plaque and citation.

Steps are being taken to increase the popularity of Kathakali. People who attend performances are being given a brief write-up in English and Malayalam about the programme.

Workshops are organised each year to popularise the art form, he said.

The awards will be given away at a function at the Kerala Fine Arts Society Hall here on May 21. The 45th annual celebrations of the club will be held at the venue on May 21 and 22.

Recruitment racket probe

A police team from the Central Police Station led by the Circle Inspector, Sam Christie Daniel, today investigated the office premises of the S.N. International as part of the probe into charges of recruiting people for U.S. Occupation forces in Iraq under the guise of granting them job visas to other Gulf countries.

The office of the firm was attacked by a group of activists of the Yuva Jana Vedi in February after media reports of such activity.

The police had registered a case at the time.

Admission to MBA course

The Kalamassery-based School of Communication and Management Studies (SCMS) has invited applications for admission to its MBA programme for 2004-05. Candidates who have MAT, CAT, XAT or ATMA score are eligible to apply. A demand draft for Rs. 750 drawn in favour of SCMS may be sent to the Admissions Officer, SCMS, South Kalamassery, Kochi 682 033, for the application form and detailed prospectus.

`School Mela'

The School Mela, organised by the District Khadi and Village Industries, is under way at the Sealine Building at Jos Junction.

Units financed by the Khadi Village Industries Board and units producing note books, umbrellas, school bags and other school items are participating in the `mela', according to a press release issued by the Project Officer of the District Khadi and Village Industries.

The fair, which began on May 12, will be on till June 10.
