Government urged to revive handloom sector

HYDERABAD, MAY 15. The Andhra Pradesh Cheneta Karmika Sangham today urged the State Government to allocate Rs. 250 crores as budget for the handlooms and textiles sector to salvage it.

A. Narasimha Rao, president, P. Nagendra, vice-president, and A. Ashok, general secretary, in a statement issued here blamed the previous regime for not honouring the promised pension of Rs.250 to each old handloom weaver.

They hailed the new Government's decision to supply free power to handloom workers.

The leaders urged the Government to scrap 9.2 per cent excise duty on yarn imposed by the NDA regime and to procure through the APCO handloom stocks worth crores lying with weavers.

Teachers assure support

Meanwhile, the Andhra Pradesh Government College Teachers Association has assured to support "progressive and development" policies of the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy. A. Leela Mohan Rao, president, A. Jayanti, vice-president, G. Venkat Reddy, general secretary, and K. Venkata Krishna, associate secretary, congratulated Dr. Reddy for assuming the high office.

The Osmania University Teachers Association while expressing happiness over Dr. Reddy assuming the Chief Minister's office said the Government should accord priority to poor students for pursuing higher education.

K. Janardhan Reddy, president, and B. Satyanarayana, general secretary, promised Dr. Reddy that the association would support his efforts to improve rural economy by involving universities and industry.

The Adivasi Employees' Welfare and Cultural Association has demanded allocation of political posts for Girijans and giving them the freedom to decide spending of funds for taking up development of thandas, according to a statement issued by J. Chandraiah, general secretary.
