Ex-convict nabbed

A former convict, Narra Nagender was nabbed by police constable Rama Rao of the S.R. Nagar police station on Saturday. Gold ornaments weighing 60 grams and an electronic watch, all worth Rs. 35,000, were recovered from Nagender's possession. According to police, the accused was a burglar and has confessed to stealing the gold ornaments from Shalivahana Nagar in Punjagutta.

Three held

Three persons who allegedly robbed an artiste of his cash and a cell phone on Wednesday night while he was travelling on their auto-rickshaw, were nabbed by the Rakshak team of the S.R. Nagar police station and a traffic constable of the Punjagutta police station.

The artiste, Vijay Kumar, a resident of Yadagiri Nagar in Yousufguda, had boarded the auto-rickshaw while returning home from Ameerpet. However, the three accused, Rahman Khan, Abdul Khadir Khan and Nizamuddin, changed the vehicle's course and near the Chest Hospital in Erragadda, pushed Mr. Kumar out of the vehicle after robbing him of Rs. 1,360 and his cell phone.

Two persons who were passing by on a two-wheeler heard Kumar's cry for help and managed to catch one of the accused, Abdul Khadir.

In the meanwhile, the police caught the other accused. The accused confessed to having committed similar offences in Mehdipatnam, Athapur, Banjara Hills, Punjagutta and Necklace Road.

Burglar arrested

An alleged burglar and vehicle lifter, Pandari Reddy of Medak district, was arrested in the wee hours of Saturday by the crime staff of the Sultan Bazaar police station while he was in Gujarati Galli on two-wheeler believed to have been stolen.

Reddy later confessed that he broke into L.G. Verma and Brothers, which dealt with money exchange and spoiled notes at Inderbagh and had stolen the two-wheeler from Gujarati Galli on Friday. He had also confessed to stealing a scooter from the Charminar area.

The police recovered two bikes and Rs. 34,000 in cash from Reddy's possession. The accused had served a jail sentence after being nabbed by the Mahankali police in 2001.

Held on theft charge

The Banjara Hills police arrested one K Umakanth Reddy, responsible for series of mobile phone thefts, and recovered 8 cell-phones worth about Rs. 50,000 from him.

A native of Chittoor district, Reddy was previously arrested by Patancheru police. He was arrested following a complaint lodged by B. Devan, a bank employee. Reddy took the cell-phone of Mr. Devan on the pretext of making a call. Subsequently, he disappeared with the phone. Reddy confessed that he had cheated seven more persons in a similar way.

Cell phones recovered

In a separate case, the Afzalgunj police arrested two persons - Syed Sajid of Kalapather and Shaik Abid of Nawabsabkunta and recovered 14 cell-phones worth Rs 40,000. They confessed that they committed theft of cell phones at various places in the twin cities. The accused used to commit the offences at busy places like theatres and bus-stands.

Maidservant held

The Banjara Hills police arrested a maidservant, K. Rani of NBT Nagar and recovered jewellery worth Rs. 5.30 lakh, which she had stolen from one Mahitha Suresh of Chennai, while she was asleep at her friend's house at Road No.12, Banjara Hills on May 7. During interrogation, she confessed to the crime.

Two nabbed

The Tappachabutra police on Friday nabbed one Radhey Shyam and his accomplice, Gopal Verma, while they were trying to dispose off stolen gold jewellery at a shop in Mehdipatnam. During interrogation, the duo told the police that they stole the valuables by breaking open the dickey of a scooter parked at Tallagadda on March 28.

Old man murdered

Disputes over money matters led to the murder of a 70-year-old man under the Medchal police station limits on Saturday. The police said that D. Anjaiah and his son D. Narsinga Rao, residents of Medchal owned a `mulgi', which they wanted to give for rent.

Accordingly, they collected Rs. 5,000 as advance from one G. Krishna, also a local resident. However, it is learnt that the father and son did not allow him to occupy the `mulgi' and moreover did not repay the amount to Krishna. To sort out the matter, Krishna called them for a meeting today. Meanwhile, a heated argument ensued between them after which Krishna picked up an axe and attacked Anjaiah and Narsinga Rao. While Anjaiah died on the spot, Narsinga Rao escaped with injuries. The Medchal police are investigating.
