Plea to formulate scheme

By Our Staff Reporter

COIMBATORE, MAY 16. The textile processing units in Erode and nearby areas have appealed to the Centre to formulate a processing park scheme similar to the apparel park and the hi-tech weaving park schemes for the benefit of the small-scale processing units.

About 300 units, including dyeing, bleaching and printing units, in Erode region have expressed their willingness to participate in the processing park to be set up in Erode region. As an initial effort, a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) would be registered to implement the proposed project.

The vice-chairman of the SPV, P.S. Vajiravel, said that five processing unit associations in Erode had jointly formed the SPV called the Small-scale Textile Eco-care Processing Park. He said that a large number of textile processing units were located near the Bhavani, the Cauvery and the Kalingarayan Canal in the Erode and Namakkal districts. In order to re-locate these small units to a single premises that would have a state-of-art common effluent treatment plant and modern facilities, it was decided to set up the park.

Nearly 300 acres would be identified for the proposed project and the location was yet to be finalised. This project was initiated under the cluster development programme of the textiles committee.

A feasibility study on the proposed project would commence shortly and would be completed within a couple of months. The study would cover details like the type of units participating, the facilities required and the project cost.

In a release, Mr. Vajiravel, requested more processing units in Erode and Namakkal areas to join the project. The park would "pave the way for a pollution-free environment and better working conditions for the units," he said.

The units could express their willingness to participate in the project through their respective associations for the next couple of months.
