Satellite receivers soon for IGNOU study centres in prisons

By Our Staff Reporter

VELLORE, MAY 16. The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) will shortly provide satellite receivers for its study centres in the Vellore, Coimbatore, Tiruchi, Madurai and Salem central prisons and the special prison for women here. The facility is to enable prisoner-students to participate in teaching programmes offered through its teleconferencing system.

K. Soundaravalli, Regional Director of IGNOU, Chennai, on Saturday said 28 prisoners in the jail here were pursuing courses in Certificate in Computing, Certificate in Food and Nutrition, Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA) and Master of Computer Applications (MCA). Besides, 12 prisoners in the special prison for women were doing courses at the study centre. Earlier Dr. Soundaravalli interacted with student as well as non-student prisoners and apprised them of the courses offered.

Murugan and Perarivalan, death convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, and Mahendran, a life convict, were studying BCA; while Nalini, life convict in the case was studying MCA.

The State government, which reimburses to the IGNOU the course fee for the prisoner-students, spent Rs. 2.33 lakhs from January 2001 to July 2003 on 144 prisoners, who studied at the study centre in the central prison here.

Dr. Soundaravalli told newspersons that the IGNOU would offer a six-month certificate course in `Community-based Rehabilitation' from this year. The syllabus was being translated into Tamil. The other courses offered in the Tamil medium were Certificate in Food and Nutrition, Diploma in Early Childhood Care, Certificate Course in Empowerment of Women through self-help groups (fees being reimbursed by the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development), and a vocational qualification programme for tannery workers (in association with the Central Leather Research Institute, Chennai, under the Leather Technology Mission), the latter being offered now to tannery workers in Erode, Dindigul and Chennai.

Lone varsity to offer B.Ed through distance mode

The IGNOU was the only university offering Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) through the distance education mode after other universities abolished it in the wake of strict enforcement of norms laid down by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) in 1999. The Tamil Nadu Open University now applied to the NCTE for permission to start B.Ed. In all, 12.2 lakh students were studying in 1,085 IGNOU study centres across the country. These included 3.1 lakhs in 80 centres in Tamil Nadu.

K. Panneerselvam, Deputy Director, IGNOU Regional Centre, Chennai, and S.N. Janardhanan, coordinator of the IGNOU-Tamil Nadu Foundation study sub-centre, said May 31 would be the last date for submission of applications for certificate courses; July 31 for degree courses; June 30 for B.Ed. and August 30 for MCA.

Earlier, at a function held at the TNF-IGNOU study sub-centre in the Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Katpadi, Dr. Soundaravalli distributed certificates to students who underwent a free summer computer course conducted jointly by the centre and the Parent-Teachers' Association of the school.
