Bijapur
By Our Staff Correspondent
BIJAPUR, MAY 16. Power supply was restored in Bijapur city late this afternoon after a 24-hour blackout which occurred after a thundershower that began at 2 p.m. on Saturday uprooted many trees and electric poles, resulting in disruption of power supply. The disruption in power supply threw life out of gear in the city. The doctors have advised people against consuming any stored item, including ice creams. Shops and business establishments transacted poor business. The staff of the Hubli Power Supply Company (HESCOM) tried to clear fallen trees but in vain till this evening. However, they succeeded in resuming power supply in some area by midnight. But a majority of the localities remained in the dark till this afternoon. Many people had a miraculous escape when a makeshift exhibition structure collapsed on Station Road. A gusty wind blew away the tin-sheet roof of the structure. Some shopkeepers near the Tahasildar's office also had a narrow escape when an uprooted tree brought down a live wire. Fallen trees and electric poles hindered the movement of vehicles on some roads. Many of the fallen trees are yet to be cleared. The rainfall inundated many low-lying areas, causing inconvenience to people. The central bus-stand was completely waterlogged, as a result of which passengers had to board and alight the buses outside the gate. Sources in HESCOM said that more than 50 electric poles and trees had fallen in the area. Two brothers from Ukkali village in Basavanabagewadi taluk, Bheemappa Agasar and Sharanappa Agasar, fell unconscious after they were struck by lightning. They are said to be recovering at the district hospital here. At Bisnal, another village in Basavanabagewadi, lightning claimed the lives of two buffaloes, according to a complaint lodged with the Managuli Police.
