Telecom Day celebrations

CUDDAPAH: The BSNL employees will be presented awards for their exemplary performance on the World Telecommunications Day 2004, being celebrated on Monday, according to the General Manager, Telecom, Cuddapah district, K.K. Thakur. The celebrations include felicitation of the oldest telecom employee, oldest customer and commercially significant subscribers, he said on Sunday. The Head of Electronics and Communication Engineering Department, KSRM College of Engineering, T. Jayachandra Prasad, will be the chief guest and the General Manager will preside over the celebrations.

Police pickets

NELLORE: The police pickets in and around Allur, mainly in fishermen dominated areas, will continue till further orders. It may be pointed out that special police pickets were set up in the areas to maintain law and order following post-poll incidents on April 26.

Blood donation

KURNOOL: The supporters of CPI(M), led by the party's city secretary, Prabhakar Reddy, donated blood to celebrate the victory of their leader, M.A. Gafoor, in the Assembly election. A total of 50 volunteers donated blood at the Red Cross blood bank. The party district secretary, T. Shadrak, and others were present.

Office-bearers elected

KURNOOL: I. Vijayakumar Reddy of Sai Electronics was elected president of the Kurnool District Chamber of Commerce and Industry on Sunday. E. Umakanth, charted accountant, was elected secretary.

Addressing a press conference, Mr. Reddy said the new body would work for promoting industrial culture in the district. He said despite the availability of raw material and entrepreneurs, the district remained backward because of lack of encouragement for businessmen. He said the chamber would coordinate with the District Industries Centre and help set up small-scale units.

Decision on user

charges hailed

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Junior Doctors' Association, while welcoming the State Government's decision to scrap user charges in hospitals, has expressed the hope that it will nationalise private medical colleges.

K. Rajasekhar Reddy, president, Osmania Medical College and Osmania Hospital units of the association, in a statement here on Sunday described the Government's decision on user charges as a blessing from heaven.

If private medical colleges were nationalised it would safeguard the health of society and prevent further degradation, Dr. Reddy opined.

He said the Chief Minister, being a doctor himself, would be well aware of the importance of preserving ethics and values in medical profession.

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Former Legislators' Forum on Sunday hailed the Government's decision to provide free power to the poor and waive electricity tariff dues of farmers and thanked the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, for honouring the promise made by the Congress during electioneering.

K. Subbaraju, convener of the forum, in a statement, urged Dr. Reddy to honour the assurance on extension of facilities to members of the forum when he was leader of the Opposition in the last Assembly.

Development of neglected temples urged

VISAKHAPATNAM: Sri Sarada Peethadhipathi, Swami Swaroopanandendra Saraswati, on Sunday advised the Endowments Department not to neglect the temples which do not have any income and make arrangements to develop them. Addressing the `chaturagama sadassu', a re-orientation programme organised for the first time by the Endowments Department for the department staff and `archakas' on conducting pujas as per the tradition, the Swami from Chinamushidivada on the outskirts of the city, noted that the department hitherto concentrated only on money-spinners while neglecting the temples which had little income.

The Regional Joint Commissioner of Endowments, G.V. Narasimha Murthy, said training for `archakas' was organised for `Vaikhanasa agamam' at Rajahmundry and for `Smartha agamam' at Annavaram for ten days each while a month-long camp was conducted for `Saiva agamam' at Draksharamam.

PR engineers' gesture

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Panchayat Raj Diploma Engineers' Association, with a membership of 5,000, has decided to contribute their one-day's salary, amounting to Rs. 20 lakhs, to the Chief Minister's Relief Fund.

A press release from the Chief Minister's office said a delegation of members of the association on Sunday presented a memorandum to the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, making the offer and specifying that it was in favour of the implementation of free power scheme to farmers in the State.

The association includes Assistant Engineers, Technical Officers and Work Inspectors. The delegation was led by M.A. Kareem, Chief Engineer, and comprised the association president, B. Ravindra Sharma, general secretary, P. Subhash Babu, and others.

Teachers' plea to CM

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh United Teachers' Federation on Sunday represented to the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, seeking steps to solve the problems facing teachers.

A press release issued by N. Narayana, general secretary of the federation, said a delegation of the federation reminded Dr. Reddy about the need to give effect to the assurances given by his predecessor in December at the UTF State conference. The delegation demanded issue of orders handing over the control of schools to local bodies and framing of fresh service rules. New rules would help solve the twin problems of promotions and transfers, the release added.

Cattle electrocuted

CUDDAPAH: Seven buffaloes were electrocuted at Pappireddipalle village in Ramapuram mandal on Sunday when they came in contact with live electric wires which fell off wooden poles in nearby fields.

Two farmers -- Sudhakar Reddy and Gangi Reddy -- were given power supply for agricultural pumpsets through wires supported by wooden poles. The wires fell on the ground due to rain and gales and seven cattle belonging to three persons of Kovvuruvandlapalle village were electrocuted.

Low pressure over Bay

HYDERABAD: A well-marked low pressure area formed over the Bay of Bengal on Sunday with a potential to intensify into a depression. Added to it, a trough of low pressure was present in the west-central Bay off the Andhra coast. Under their impact, several areas experienced rain which may continue on Monday also. During the 24-hour period ended Sunday morning, there was rain in Telangana and Rayalaseema and it was isolated in coastal Andhra. Anantapur recorded a rainfall of 6 cm, Hanamkonda 4 cm, Parigi and Veeraghattam 3 cm each, Tirupati Airport 2 cm and Cuddapah, Hyderabad, Nandyal, Nellore and Narsipatnam 1 cm each. Maximum temperature of 41 degree Celsius was recorded by Nizamabad, Hanamkonda and Nandigama during the period.
