AIDS memorial observed

By Our Staff Reporter

TIRUPATI, MAY 16. The International AIDS candlelight memorial, observed on the third Sunday of May throughout the world to express solidarity with the victims of the disease, was observed here today.

As is the practice, a silent procession, with the marchers holding lit candles, was taken out from Poola Matham to Nalugukalla Mandapam. Members of the District AIDS Control Society participated and paid tributes to those who died of AIDS. Doctors and paramedical staff also took part.

The nodal officer for AIDS control, K. Sarojamma, led the procession.

Women's Initiatives (WINS), a local NGO working with HIV-positive patients and sex workers, conducted a parallel march from the Municipal Office. Students participated in the march and pledged to work for the cause of the HIV-infected, to protect their rights and to erase the stigma attached to them.

The day is observed to instil confidence in patients that coexistence with the dreaded disease is possible.
