Mammootty held up at airport

KOCHI, MAY 16. The actor, Mammootty, had to spend time at the Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) here today after an error occurred in calculating the customs duty for a television that he brought with him from Dubai. The actor, who reached here from Dubai by Emirates flight EK 530 along with wife, declared the television set he was carrying as an used one and was asked to pay Rs. 10,000 as duty.

However, the customs intelligence officials found that the television set would cost about Rs. 1.5 lakhs and the actor was asked to pay up to 40 per cent of its estimated cost.

As Mr. Mammootty was not having enough cash on him, he had to spend some time at the airport, said one of the customs officials who was on duty. No offence was registered as Mr. Mammootty had declared the television and hence there was no instance of concealment, he added.

Gas gun recovered: A passenger bound for Frankfurt was stopped from carrying a gas gun aboard a flight to Dubai. Thomas Philip (53), native of Changanassery, was stopped after an object resembling a revolver was found in his luggage. Even though bullets could not be loaded into this gun, it could emit gas and cause irritation to eyes and was not allowed on flights, said police officials at the Chengamanad station. Case was registered and Mr. Philip was released on bail later.

Man arrested: A man was arrested for using fake passport at the Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) here today. Rajan (28), a native of Kollam reached Kochi from Abu Dhabi by flight GF 270. He would be handed over to Crime Branch CID on Monday, the police said.
