Alappuzha, Kannur triumph

THRISSUR, MAY 17. Alappuzha and Kannur won the boy's and girl's titles respectively in the 21st State Youth basketball championship at the GHSS, Kandassankadavu here on Sunday night. Alappuzha trounced Pathanamthitta 66-36 in the boy's final while Kannur edged out holder Kottayam 54-53 to win the girl's crown.

Kannur appeared to have clinched the match when it held a comfortable 45-30 lead at the end of the third quarter.

However, Kottayam led by K.S.Anu, who top scored with 29 points, staged a dramatic comeback in the last quarter.

Anu converted three free throws in the dying seconds of the match to bring down the deficit to just one point but her side ran out of time.

Earlier in the day, Ernakulam defeated Pathanamthitta 57-50 to take the third spot in girl's section. Malappuram prevailed over Thrissur 39-26 to finish third in boy's section.

The results:

Boys (final): Alappuzha 66 (Mathew M.Pattom 24, Rahul Krishna 16, Kevin Varghese 14) bt Pathanamthitta 36 (Nelson 8).

Loser's final: Malappuram 39 (Robin James 23) bt Thrissur 26 (Eudrick 8. semifinals: Pathanamthitta 70 (Nirmal K.Mathew 23, Nelson Jose 18, Jijo Thankachan 10) bt Malappuram 69 (Shijo 28, Bobin 28, Nithin 100: Alappuzha 30 (Kevin Mathew 8) bt Thrissur 13.

Girls (final): Kannur 54 (H.Neena 13, Reshma 12) bt Kottayam 53 (K.S.Anu 29). Loser's final: Ernakulam 57 (Annamma Abraham 41) bt Pathanamthitta 50 (Jeena Annie Thomas 32). Semifinal: Kannur 34 (Reshma 11, Priyanka 10) bt Pathanamthitta 8.
