Need for popularising Indian fine arts stressed

TIRUCHI, MAY 17. The need for popularising fine arts of Indian origin was underlined by speakers at a function held here on Sunday to mark the inauguration of the Odissi dance recital sponsored by the Rasika Ranjana Sabha.

They said from time immemorial, the country was reputed for various forms of fine arts, dance and music but over the years, some of them had lost their identity. Efforts should be made to revive these branches of fine arts.

The noted Odissi dance exponent and chairperson of the Central Sangeet Natak Akademy, New Delhi, Sonal Mansingh, said the young artistes should use their artistic talents as a tool for serving the Almighty. The artistes could feel the power of cosmic rays all around them while rendering performance.

The noted writer, Prema Nandakumar, said the commercial connection between Tamil Nadu and Kalinga in the hoary past was crucial for the spread of the Odissi dance to this part of the country. She recalled the meticulous efforts made by Mrs. Sonal Mansingh, in popularising this fine art through her researches on temple sculptures and mastery of Sanskrit and Hindi literary works.

Apart from reviving the Odissi form of dance, Mrs. Sonal Mansigh had blended the modern day Nandini Ramani, dance correspondent, The Hindu , Chennai, commended the efforts made by the Rasika Ranjana Sabha in promoting fine arts.

The vice-president of the Sabha, N.Gopalasamy and its honorary secretary N.Sekar were among those who spoke.

Later, Mrs. Sonal Mansingh gave an Odissi dance performance.
