This Day That Age
"Why did I become Congress President?" Mr. Nehru posed this question and himself provided the answer while inaugurating the Political Conference of the Delhi State Congress in New Delhi on May 15. "It was not a very wise thing to take up this additional burden and responsibility when I had so much work on my hands to do already. But, I did so because I found there was no other way out. There is no other party or group today having the stamina or the strength to bear the responsibility and take the country forward. It is only the Congress which was responsible for keeping India together during the vital and dangerous period of the last seven years. Without this cohesive force of the Congress, India would have disintegrated."
