dated May 19, 1954: U.S. ruling on schools

The U.S. Supreme Court unanimously ruled in Washington on May 17 that the segregation of Negro and white pupils in the nation's public schools was unconstitutional. The Court said the separation of school children because of race or colour violated the constitutional guarantee of equal protection of the laws for all. This decision overruled the doctrine established by the Supreme Court 57 years ago that equal but separate facilities were legal for Negro children in elementary and high schools supported by State Governments.
