This Day That Age
The Madras Government announced on May 18 their decision to drop the modified scheme of elementary education and to revert to the scheme of elementary education in force prior to its introduction in July 1953. Mr. C. Subramaniam, Education Minister, making the announcement in the Madras Legislative Assembly, said that the necessary acceptance, support and cooperation of the people were not forthcoming for the scheme and the "atmosphere" was not propitious for the success of the scheme. He added that the entire subject would be examined de novo and the Government had decided to take steps to constitute a committee to consider this matter.
