Cyclonic storm moves away

BHUBANESWAR, MAY 18. The Orissa Government today heaved a sigh of relief as the cyclonic storm over the east central and adjoining north Bay of Bengal began moving away from the State towards the east.

Met office sources said the storm now lay centred about 380 km south-east of Balasore.

The system may intensify further, move in a northerly direction and head towards the Bangladesh coast, the sources said.

Earlier, the storm remained practically stationary and lay centred about 320 km south east of Balasore. The coastal districts in the State were alerted.

As per the earlier warning issued by the met authorities, the system was expected to intensify further and move in a north-westerly direction and cross the north Orissa-West Bengal coast between Paradip and Kolkata by tomorrow morning.

The met authorities had suggested total suspension of fishing operations, as the sea was expected to be rough while hutment dwellers living along the coast had been advised to move to safer places.
