RAJAHMUNDRY, MAY 18. Former Union Minister S.B.P.B.K. Satyanarayana Rao, who contested as an independent from the Rajahmundry Lok Sabha constituency and polled about 1 lakh votes, on Tuesday asserted that power was not a prerequisite to serve people and he would continue to be in public life and serve people in whatever humble way it was possible for him. Thanking people for the support they had extended, Mr. Satyanarayana Rao, who spoke to presspersons at Bommuru, said that as an independent he would be free to express his views and take steps in a way that would be helpful to people. He said that the verdict at the national level was confusing and it was not in favour of any single party, including the Congress. However, the verdict in Andhra Pradesh was clear. People wanted a change, Mr.Rao said. Answering questions, Mr.Satyanarayana Rao said that he had decided to contest not to ensure the defeat of the BJP candidate, which had denied him renomination. "I wanted victory but some external forces acted" leading to change of result. According to him, the BJP had lost because it had selected a candidate who had not done any service to the people.
