MADURAI, MAY 18. Twelve persons with `cholera-like symptoms' were admitted to the Cholera Collection Centre of the Infectious Disease Hospital at Austinpatti near here. They were from four blocks in Tirumangalam and surrounding areas, according to S. Chandrasekaran, medical officer. The patients, including six women, were brought in a serious condition with complaints of diarrhoea and vomiting. Preliminary treatment for diarrhoeal disease was given to them. Dr. Chandrasekaran said doctors diagnosed the problem as acute gastroenteritis. Whether it was cholera or not would be known only after all test results were available tomorrow. Samples of stools were sent to the Microbiology Department of the Madurai Medical College and the results are expected on Wednesday evening. The recent rain is a possible reason for the cholera-like symptoms, as water contamination led to diarrhoea and vomiting. The hospital alerted the people to drink boiled water.
