CHENNAI, MAY 18. T.S. Ravi of Indian Oil annexed the 52nd Tamil Nadu State Chess Championship for the V.J. Brahmiah Trophy at Kesari High School, Mylapore, here on Tuesday. Though Ravi and International Master P. Konguvel (ONGC) collected nine points each in this 11-round event, Ravi won the title based on his superior tie-break score. In Tuesday's final round, Ravi beat former State champion Ram S. Krishnan. Ravi exploited a minor error, got a king-side attack and translated this to the win of a central pawn after which he changed the game into a rook and pawn ending. The 32-year-old T.S. Ravi had won the title in 1989 and 1999. He became an International Master in 2002. International Master P. Konguvel was held to a 10-move draw by Madurai's C. Praveen Kumar, who exchanged off queens from the white side of a Grunfeld to reach a colourless ending. The top four from this championship will participate in the National `B' Championship to be held at Vijayawada from June 16 to 27. M.S. Krishnamurthy of Sree Durga Constructions gave away the prizes.
