HASSAN, MAY 18. The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) here on Tuesday has claimed credit for the political impasse caused by the hung Assembly in the State. Sreedhara Kalaveer, BSP State unit General Secretary, told presspersons that the electorate had voted the Congress out of power. Although the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had emerged as the single largest party in the Legislative Assembly, the voters had kept it away from power. He said there was no mandate for the Congress to form the Government in the State as people had rejected it. Any attempt by that party to form the Government would be a crime in the eyes of the electorate, he said. However, the Congress could only extend outside support to the Janata Dal (Secular) if the latter staked claim to form the Government, he added. Mr. Kalaveer said the BSP had improved its position in the district. He said when the other parties failed to nominate candidates from minority communities it was the BSP that provided an opportunity to them. He said the BSP had gained momentum after the visit of Mr. Kanshiram to the district in 1994 and the party had been making progress in the State. Citing the money and muscle power of the other "Manuvadi" parties and sympathy wave of the former Prime Minister, H.D. Deve Gowda, as the reason for the defeat of the party in the district, he said that the party was responsible for the defeat of the Congress candidates, including the Revenue Minister, H.C. Srikantaiah, in the Hassan Lok Sabha Constituency and B.B. Shivappa, G.V. Siddappa, and D. Mallesh in Sakleshpur, Arsikere, and Belur respectively. Reacting to a question on the plight of Dalits in Gangoor in Arkalgud district, where they had not been sanctioned land, even after being released from bonded labour, he said that the BSP would continue to fight against the injustice heaped on Dalits in the district for the past several years. Mr. Kalaveer said that he would strive hard to strengthen the party in the district and would play a pivotal role in the coming days. Referring to the attempts made by the Janata Dal (Secular) to form the Government in the State with the support of the Congress, he predicted that such a Government would not survive for long.
