BIS seizes unlicensed drinking water sachets

VISAKHAPATNAM, MAY 18. The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) had seized huge stock of packaged drinking water sachets during a raid at Srikakulam on Monday, according to the Director and head of the BIS, N.P. Kawale.

The raid was conducted on Surya Industries after receiving reports that the ISI mark was being misused in the case of the unit's packaged drinking water sachets with the brand name of Aqua Happy. The unit was using ISI mark without obtaining licence for the same. The BIS officials were told during the raid by one, N. Surya Prakasa Rao, that his daughter was the owner of the unit. Mr. Kawale recalled that during a similar raid carried out on the Amrutha Industries at Kadiyam in East Godavari district, owned by one, K.P.N. Murthy, huge stock of Amrutha brand packaged drinking water sachets were seized for allegedly carrying out business without obtaining licence. The BIS Act has a provision to impose a fine upto Rs. 50,000 or imprisonment upto one year, or both, for the violators of the Act, Mr. Kawale informed.

He advised the consumers to prefer only ISI marked water sachets with the authentic CM/L number and IS No. 14543 printed on the sachets. The consumers were also requested to contact the BIS office here on telephone No. 2712843 if they noticed violation of ISI mark and also to the State health authorities. Under the BIS Certification Marks Act, as mentioned in the Union Ministry of Health's GO which came into effect from March 29, 2001, no person can manufacture, sell or exhibit for sale the packaged drinking water and the packaged natural mineral water except with the ISI mark, which was granted by the BIS as per IS:14543 and IS: 13428 numbers respectively.
