MANGALORE, MAY 18. The Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy is 10 years old. Set up in 1994 by the State Government for the development of the Konkani language and literature, the academy has organised 125 programmes, including dramas, poets' meet, and kala utsavs, and released a series of articles, honoured people, and felicitated litterateurs with awards. The academy completed 10 years in April 2004. To commemorate the occasion, it has decided to organise a two-day "Konkani Utsav" at the Town Hall from May 26. The former Minister, R.V. Deshpande, will be the chief guest at the decennial celebrations function. The academy proposes to bring out a souvenir to mark the occasion. Work is underway to bring out 10 books as part of the decennial celebrations. Besides, the academy will organise an essay writing contest, a seminar, a poets' meet, and various literary competitions. Performances by folk troupes reflecting the essence of Konkani and its culture has been organised as part of the function. The academy has published 27 books, including 18 in the "Konkani Mahamanestha" series. It has brought out the Konkani Samananthara Shabdakosha, which includes words from Konkani dialects, and a textbook titled Konkani Kello aimed at helping children learn Konkani. It has aided 116 writers under its bulk purchase, book purchase, and book publication schemes. The academy has constantly purchased books by Konkani writers for its information centre. It has honoured 46 Konkani speaking people for their service in the fields of literature, drama, music, and folk art. The academy has also given awards to 15 publications. Various programmes organised by the Konkani speaking people across the State is being assisted by the academy. In a bid to develop the language, the "Balaprathiba contest" is being held for schoolchildren at the zonal and State level. In an effort to inculcate love for Konkani among the youth, the academy periodically organises literary meets for them. It also imparts training to teachers who teach the language.
