TIRUCHI, MAY 18. The rights of consumers enshrined in the Tamil Nadu Transport Act and the consumer-oriented services rendered by the railways were highlighted at a special summer training camp organised by the Federation of Consumer Organisations Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry (FEDCOT) here yesterday. The camp was aimed at creating an awareness of consumer rights. Experts from consumer movements explained various procedures to be followed while preferring a complaint of any erratic or unfair service. They also emphasised the responsibilities of the consumers for ensuring safe travel. Strategies to be adopted by bus crew for safe and comfortable travel were explained. The dos and don'ts in the advance reservation procedures for travelling in buses would not only facilitate the transport corporations but also ensure a comfortable journey for passengers, they said. On the maintenance and proper upkeep of bus stands, the emphasis was more on information. They appealed to the local bodies to ensure that the timetable of buses plying from and via the concerned bus stand, not only in the urban limits but also in the rural areas, was displayed prominently. A complaint-cum-suggestion register should be maintained promptly and made available in the transport offices. On the railway services, they said the railways offered a wide range of concessions to the commuters and appealed to the people to take advantage of them. The benefits and concessions available for the physically handicapped and the student community were highlighted. A guide explaining consumer protection rules and regulations along with the government orders was released at the camp.
