HYDERABAD, MAY 18. The Chief Minister, Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, today criticised the BJP leaders for "carrying out a vicious campaign" against the AICC president, Sonia Gandhi, and expressed confidence that she would accept the Congress Parliamentary Party leadership. He wondered why the Prime Minister, A.B. Vajpayee, was encouraging his party leaders to make personal attacks and speak much against overwhelming people's mandate in favour of Mrs. Gandhi. The Chief Minister was speaking to presspersons before conclusion of the political drama at the Congress Parliamentary Party in New Delhi where Ms. Gandhi declined to be the Prime Minister. He said if the BJP leader, Sushma Swaraj, was so keen on getting her head tonsured, she could have done that soon after her losing the Lok Sabha elections against Mrs. Gandhi from Bellary. And if the Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister, Uma Bharathi, was sincere about quitting her post, she should have submitted her resignation to the Governor and not her party president. "It is nothing but a gimmick". He dismissed as "hypothetical", when asked if he would extend support to the candidature of Manmohan Singh. "We would all convince Mrs. Gandhi to accept the leadership. All the 37 MPs and 226 MLAs from Andhra Pradesh are solidly behind her". Asked about the formation of State Cabinet, he said there was plenty of time and it would be after constitution of the Union Cabinet. He will be leaving for Delhi tomorrow.
