This Day That Age
The nine nations trying to end the Indo-China war made no progress at a stormy secret session in Geneva on May 18. An acrimonious exchange between M. Georges Bidault, the French Foreign Minister, and Mr. Pham Van Dong, the Viet Minh Deputy Premier, dominated an East-West row over Laos and Cambodia. The Viet Minh repeated their demand that an Indo-China settlement must include these two States which the West says should not be a subject of dispute. The Soviet Foreign Minister, Mr. Molotov, backed the Viet Minh demand.
