Assam
By Sushanta Talukdar
GUWAHATI, MAY 19. A year after Ellora Roy Choudhary became the first woman from northeastern India to have donated her body for medical studies, more and more people in Assam have come forward to pledge their bodies and organs after death. Roy Choudhary, a young activist of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), who died of cancer on May 15, 2003, donated her body to the Gauhati Medical College Hospital (GMCH) and her eyes to the Sankardeva Nethralaya. People who were inspired by her action set up the Ellora Vigyan Manch on her first death anniversary. The non-governmental organisation (NGO) aims to conduct an awareness campaign on organ donation and to inculcate a scientific temperament among the people. The historian, Amalandu Guha, announced his decision to donate his body for medical studies at a meeting here. Isfaqur Rahman, husband of Roy Choudhary and one of the organisers, said that the Ellora Vigyan Manch would organise campaigns to encourage blood donation, organ donation and cadaver donation. The NGO would work with doctors, paramedical staff, hospitals, laboratories and testing centres for sensitising the people.
