GANDHINAGAR, MAY 19. Congress workers all over Gujarat organised protest meetings and burnt effigies of some BJP leaders for their tirade against the AICC president, Sonia Gandhi, on the issue of her foreign origin. In several cities, protesters turned violent and clashed with police while in some other places, they blocked traffic for several hours.In Ahmedabad, demonstrators, led by the city Mayor, Aneesa Mirza, and the city district Congress president, Rajkumar Gupta, also signed a letter in blood requesting Ms. Gandhi not to renounce the high office. According to the Pradesh Congress president, Hasmukh Patel, demonstrations were organised in nearly 125 taluka headquarters in the State where agitated party workers burnt the effigies of the BJP leaders, Sushma Swaraj and Uma Bharti, and the former BJP ideologue, Govindacharya. The State Congress Legislature Party adopted a resolution seeking the Chief Minister, Modi's resignation.
