LUCKNOW, MAY 19. The Uttar Pradesh State Assembly Speaker, Kesrinath Tripathi, today resigned, putting an end to the controversy over his contesting the recent Lok Sabha elections on the Bharatiya Janata Party ticket. Mr. Tripathi, who had been elected Speaker during the Bahujan Samaj Party regime, continued to hold the post even after its ouster, the succeeding Samajwadi Party Government holding the view that there was no need for him to resign. This led the Congress, an ally of the ruling SP, to make insinuations that there was some kind of secret understanding between the SP and the BJP.
