NEW DELHI, MAY 19. The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam today decided to join the Union Cabinet immediately in view of the changed circumstances. The DMK president, M. Karunanidhi, made this announcement to reporters shortly after the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, called on him at his hotel here this morning. He handed over to the Congress general secretary, Kamal Nath (who accompanied Ms. Gandhi) the letter of support of the 16 MPs, addressed to the President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, to a secular government to be formed by the Congress, its allies and like-minded parties. Asked what transpired between him and Ms. Gandhi, the DMK leader said she wanted the party's participation to strengthen the government in the light of her decision not to accept the prime ministership. Asked whether Ms. Gandhi had given any reason for her decision, Mr. Karunanidhi said, "she did not give any reason. I tried to persuade her to reconsider the decision, but she said she cannot accept the post due to certain circumstances." He said that "in his view, the uncivilised and orchestrated campaign launched by the BJP and the RSS might have been the reasons for her not accepting the post." He declined to disclose either the names of the party's nominees likely to be inducted in the government or the number of ministers. During the 10-minute meeting, Mr. Karunanidhi presented to Ms. Gandhi a photograph taken in 1970 along with the then Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi, when he visited Delhi to participate in the Chief Ministers' Conference. Sources said that at that time, Indira Gandhi had invited Mr. Karunanidhi and his family for breakfast. The photograph was taken on that occasion.
