School's achievement

Bidar May 19. Morarji Desai Residential School at Kamathana in Bidar recorded 87 per cent results in the recent SSLC examination.

Of the 41 students, eight got first class, 13 second class, and 15 third class. Anil Kumar Neelkanth, Rajesh Dhansingh and Shivraj Manohar passed the examination with distinction, according to the Principal, R.F. Hugar.

Volunteers

Bidar May 19. Nehru Yuva Kendra has invited applications from youths in rural areas to take up voluntary service for a year.

According to a press release, applicants for the posts of rashtriya seva karyakarthas should be graduates or should have passed a three-year diploma course. They should be below 27 years. There will be a relaxation of three years for SC/ST and women candidates who have passed the pre-university examination.

NCC cadets, NSS volunteers and members of rural development associations will be given preference. Applications should be submitted to D. Dayanand, District Youth Affairs Coordinator, Nehru Yuva Kendra, Bal Bhavan, KHB Colony, Bidar - 585401, before May 25.

Compensation

Bidar May 19. The State Government has sanctioned a compensation of Rs. 50,000 each to the families of three persons who died when lightning struck them in the district in April and May.

Hanumantappa Ganapati, Gousuddin Mehaboobsab and Salim Mastansab died at Nagura village of Bidar taluk when lightning struck them.

The tahsildar had submitted a report in this regard to the Deputy Commissioner, T.K. Anil Kumar.

Admission

Bidar May 19. Applications have been invited for admission to the two government industrial training institutes in Bidar and Humnabad, according to a press release.

Applications can be had from the institutes. The last date for submitting applications is June 16. Admissions will be made according to government rules.

16 arrested

Bidar May 19. The police raided a mill here on Sunday and arrested 16 persons on the charge of gambling.

A press release said that a team led by the Additional Superintendent of Police, V.B. Kittali, raided the mill and arrested its owner, Vaijanath Navalkeri, and 15 others. Five mobile phones and a stake money of Rs. 53,880 had been seized from them, it added.

Course

Bidar May 19. Applications have been invited for admission to a course in sugar technology at the Sugar Technology Institute here.

Students who have passed B. Sc. with Chemistry as one of the subjects and BE graduates (Chemical Engineering) can apply. Applications can be obtained from the office of the director of the institute, Halahalli, Bidar, before June 9. The last date for submitting applications is June 11. Mass marriage

BHADRAVATI MAY 19. The Chatrapati Shivaji Seva Sangh will hold the eighth free mass marriage programme to commemorate Shivaji's 377th birth anniversary on May 30.

Ranganatha Rao Chawan, vice-president of the sangh, said widow marriage would also be entertained at the programme. The application forms could be obtained from the office of the sangh and should be submitted by May 20.

Three killed in road accident

BIJAPUR MAY 19. Three persons were killed and two injured in an accident involving a Tempo and a truck on National Highway 13 near Beeraladinni Cross in Basavanabagewadi taluk on Wednesday. The police gave the names of dead as the Malako (40), Tempo driver, and Ramu Manwade (45) both from Ahmednagar in Gujarat. The third person is yet to be identified. The injured have been admitted to the district hospital here.

Power consumption dips

Raichur May 19. Power generation at the Raichur Thermal Power Station (RTPS) near here is at its optimum level and touched a maximum plant load factor (PLF) of more than 95 per cent on Wednesday. Power consumption in the State has come down to 68.44 million units a day from 85 mu a day. Official sources told The Hindu that all the seven units (210 MW each) had been in operation generating about 33.50 mu of power a day as against the installed generating capacity of 35 mu a day. The first unit was generating about 4.54 mu, second unit 4.90 mu, third unit 4.78 mu, fourth unit 4.75 mu, fifth unit 4.88 mu, sixth unit 4.80 mu, and seventh unit 4.78 mu.

Trade fair from June 10

Bangalore May 19. A four-day industries trade fair "Infrastructure Engineering and Technology India (IETI 2004)" will be held at the Palace Grounds here from June 10. The fair approved by the India Trade Promotion Organisation has attracted over 150 technology companies. The IETI will feature six industrial segments: automobile, infrastructure, power, engineering and machine tools, instrumentation and control, and fasteners. The IETI will also be organising seminars on the latest trends in power, engineering and automobile sectors. The brand ambassador for IETI is Syed Kirmani, former Test cricketer.

`Sonia's decision shocking'

BANGALORE MAY 19. The Chairman of the Karnataka Forest Development Corporation, Ismail Khan, has expressed shock over the Congress President, Sonia Gandhi's decision against heading the new government at the Centre. In a press release here on Wednesday, Mr. Khan said Muslims voted for the Congress trusting the leadership of Ms. Gandhi. The minorities backed the Congress to strengthen the hands of Ms. Gandhi in her battle against communal forces.

JD(S) praises Congress chief

Bangalore May 19. There is praise for the AICC President, Sonia Gandhi, from the Janata Dal (Secular), which is attempting to forge an alliance with the Congress in the State. The General Secretary of the State unit of the Janata Dal (S), Ramesh Babu, said that by declining to become Prime Minister, Ms. Gandhi had enhanced the country's democratic values. In a statement here today, he said the BJP and its allies should abide by the Constitution and uphold democratic traditions. It was improper on the part of some BJP leaders to have attempted to make a big issue of the foreign origin of Ms. Gandhi. Mr. Ramesh Babu questioned the statement of the BJP leader, Sushma Swaraj, who had threatened to tonsure her head if Ms. Gandhi was sworn in as Prime Minister. If Ms. Swaraj was opposed to the foreign origin of Ms. Gandhi, she should not have contested against her from Bellary in 1999, he said.

Admission to hostel

The Social Welfare Department has invited applications from Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe and other backward class candidates for admission to the Government Girls and Boys' Hostel at Ramanagaram in Bangalore Rural district. The candidates are requested to obtain applications from the Taluk Social Welfare Officer, Ramanagaram, and submit them to the officer, on or before June 9, according to an official press release.

Department reorganised

BANGALORE MAY 19. The Department of Industries and Commerce has been reorganised with effect from May 1, 2004 and all taluk industries centres in Bangalore Rural district have been closed down. Those which have ceased to exist are the taluk industries centres at Ramangaram, Kanakapura, Channapatna, Magadi, Doddaballapur, Hoskote, Nelamangala, and Devanahalli. The members of the public and industrialists have been requested to contact the office of the Joint Director, District Industries Centre, 4th Floor, Vokkaligara Sangha Bhavan, Kittur Rani Chennamma Circle (Hudson Circle), Bangalore, for any information (phone: 22222641).

Applications invited

BANGALORE MAY 19. Applications have been invited from retired/relieved Army/Air Force/Naval officers for the post of Deputy Director in the Department of Sainik Welfare and Resettlement in the State. Candidates must be former commissioned officers of the Army of the rank of Major/Lieutenant Colonel or equivalent from Navy or Air Force or short service commission officers of the rank of Captain and above. Candidates must be below the age of 55 and domiciled in Karnataka. They should be able to speak, read, and write in Kannada. Janata Party reviews poll showing

Bangalore May 19. The Working President of the Janata Party and Rajya Sabha member, Vijay Mallya, today reviewed the performance of the party in the recent elections to the Legislative Assembly and the Lok Sabha. While the party won two seats in the Assembly elections in Andhra Pradesh, it failed to open its account in Karnataka and a number of party candidates lost their deposits. The district and State-level leaders of the party attended the review meeting. A section of the leaders and workers of the party has been demanding an introspection and implementation of certain steps that could make the party more vibrant. Some of the district leaders also hit out against the senior Vice-President, Pradeep Kumar Reddy, who was recently expelled from the primary membership of the party. Mr. Pradeep Kumar Reddy had levelled serious charges against Mr. Mallya and had held him directly responsible for the rout in the elections. He had also demanded the resignation of Mr. Mallya from the post of Working President. The district presidents told presspersons that Mr. Pradeep Kumar Reddy was fully posted with the developments in the party during the run-up to the elections and he should not be complaining against Mr. Mallya now.
