NEW DELHI, MAY 19. A large number of Congress workers today demonstrated at Jantar Mantar here against the Bharatiya Janata Party leadership for raking up the nationality issue of the party president, Sonia Gandhi. Agitated Congress workers led by the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president, Prem Singh, also burnt effigies of top BJP leaders including Atal Bihari Vajpayee, L.K. Advani, Venkaiah Naidu, Govindacharya, Sushma Swaraj and Uma Bharti. Addressing the demonstrators, Mr. Singh said BJP leaders along with their allies in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) were yet to come to terms with the humiliating defeat they suffered at the hands of the Congress and its allies. "When people had rejected them then why were they stooping so low by raising the nationality issue of Ms. Gandhi," he questioned. "The people of India will never forgive the BJP and the Sangh Parivar for launching a slander campaign against Ms. Gandhi despite the fact that the people across the nation have voted for her and wanted her to become the Prime Minister. The actions of BJP leaders is an insult not only to the people of the nation but also to the Constitution and the Supreme Court," he alleged. Targeting the BJP leaders, particularly the former Union Minister, Sushma Swaraj; the Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister, Uma Bharti; and Govindacharya, Mr. Singh said these leaders had brought shame to the nation and its great democratic tradition. Ms. Gandhi's decision not to accept the post of Prime Minister had shattered the dreams and aspirations of millions of Indians, particularly those belonging to poor and weaker sections of society, he added. Among the prominent Congress who participated in the demonstration included Sandeep Dikshit, Parvez Hashmi, Tajdar Babar, Narendra Nath, Mateen Ahmed, Naseeb Singh, Anil Bhardwaj, Kiran Chaudhary and Mukesh Goel.
