`No substitute for good governance'

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, MAY 19. The former Finance Minister and Congress Jananayaka Peravai general secretary, P. Chidambaram, today welcomed the AIADMK Government withdrawing the harsh laws including the law banning forced conversions. He said one could hope that she had taken these steps after realising her mistakes.

But withdrawing harsh laws was different from delivering good governance, he said and added that it remained to be seen if this government would implement schemes and laws, which were expected of a good government.

CM's decision hailed

The All-India Christian Council has welcomed the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa's decision to repeal the anti-Conversion law.

The council, in a release, said the decision would strengthen the secular democratic foundations on which modern India was formed. It welcomed the withdrawal of cases against people involved in the press and institutions connected with freedom of speech.
