VIJAYAWADA, MAY 19. Congress activists took out rallies in different parts of the city urging the AICC president, Sonia Gandhi, to take over as the next Prime Minister here on Wednesday. They burnt effigies of BJP leaders, Venkaiah Naidu, Sushma Swaraj and others, protesting against their remarks on Ms. Gandhi. Activists led by the Vijayawada East MLA elect, Vangaveeti Radhakrishna, burnt the effigy of Ms. Swaraj, at Madhu Chowk. Followers of former Minister, Devineni Rajasekhar, took out a rally demanding Ms. Gandhi to lead the country by becoming the Prime Minister. Another group of activists burnt an effigy of Ms. Swaraj at Panja Centre in One Town. The followers Akula Srinivas Kumar burnt an effigy of Ms. Swaraj in Bhavanipuram and staged a rasta roko on National Highway-9 protesting against the remarks of the former union minister. The DCC president and Avanigadda MLA-elect, Mandali Buddha Prasad, convened a meeting to chalk out an agitation programme. Congress MLAs-elect, Pinnamaneni Venkateswara Rao, Perni Venkataramaiah, Meka Pratap Appa Rao, former ZP chairman, Pinnamaneni Koteswara Rao, attended the meeting. Mr Buddha Prasad said that the main purpose of the meeting was to pass a resolution urging Ms. Gandhi to lead the country. But no resolution was passed because, the CPP had elected Dr.Manmohan Singh as its new leader.
