HYDERABAD, MAY 19. The Sikh community of the twin cities today welcomed the soft-spoken economist and architect of liberalisation, Manmohan Singh, taking over as Prime Minister. "It is a very good development and the liberalisation process commenced by him way back in 1991 will be taken to its logical conclusion," was the general refrain among them even as Dr. Singh's candidature for one of the highest posts in the country was finalised amid high drama in Delhi. On a lighter note though, an architect, Gurjeet Singh, chuckled amid guffaws from his friends in Banjara Hills, saying: "We sardars are going to rule... " An assistant consultant with Satyam Computers, Dwinder Singh Virk, says: "More than he being a member of the community, I am happy that a great economist of the highest calibre has been chosen for the highest post." "He is the best man for the stability of the Government, the country and yes, stock market too," he said. Dr. Singh's maiden press conference after being declared Prime Ministerial candidate wherein he spoke about his plan to set up a first-of-its-kind reform model which would make the entire world look up to India won all-around praise here. "He is respected across the political spectrum and recognised all over the world," Mr. Singh maintained.
