HYDERABAD, MAY 19. Leakage of acetic acid from a drum, being transported in a DCM van, sent passers-by and locals into a state of panic on the IDPL main road in Balanagar on Wednesday night. Traffic came to a grinding halt and the pungent smell emanating from the chemical that spilled over the road only added to the fears of the public forcing the police to press fire-tenders into service. Though reasons for the leakage were not yet known, the Balanagar Assistant Commissioner of Police, S. Diwakar, said the drum's lid accidentally came off. A private company, Swasthik Udyog Training, was transporting 10 drums of the chemical from Balanagar to Fatehnagar, the ACP said. The police did not register a case. "The Pollution Control Board will look into the matter," the ACP added.
